The death toll following a soccer match in Cairo on Wednesday has risen to 73, with more than 1,000 injured.

Fans of rival soccer teams rushed the field, hurling stones and sticks at each other and sparking a stampede. Most of the deaths occurred due to the stampede, according to witnesses and reports.

Al-Masry, the home team, completed a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. The Al-Masry fans then chased players and fans from the rival teams.

Soon after the violence, a match at Cairo Stadium between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek teams was called off in mourning for the violence in Port Said.

According to a Reuters report from military sources, Egypt's Field Marshal ordered two helicopters be sent to Port Said to fly out some of the visiting Al Ahli soccer team and its fans.
