Fans are going to meet another significant woman from Sherlock’s (Jonny Lee Miller) past in an upcoming Season 5 episode of “Elementary.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Rob Doherty revealed that the mystery character will be portrayed by Joanna Christie, who currently plays Connie Murphy on Netflix’s crime thriller “Narcos.”

“We’re going to meet a woman from Sherlock’s past, someone we meet over the course of a support group meeting,” Doherty said of how Christie’s character will be introduced on the show. “It’s someone who Sherlock will know, but the audience won’t. We’ll use the [season’s remaining] episodes to tell a story of who she is and why she’s significant to him.”

Doherty said that it’s hard to describe what kind of relationship this mystery woman has with the British sleuth. “Is there or was there a romantic involvement?” the exec producer teased. “She and Sherlock have some overlapping damage. There’s also something that will seem potentially malevolent. What interested me most about introducing this woman is that she’s someone that I think our audience probably assumed they would never get to see.”

According to TVLine, the mystery woman from Sherlock’s past makes her first appearance in Season 5, episode 23, which is the season’s penultimate episode.

But before viewers get to meet Christie’s character, they will first see Sherlock and his partner Joan (Lucy Liu) investigate the murder of a reality show contestant in this week’s Season 5, episode 22.

According to the synopsis for the installment, titled “Moving Targets,” Sherlock and Joan suspect that the victim was murdered by one of her opponents in the same game show. “We’re looking for a sore loser on a game show,” Sherlock says in the trailer for the episode.

“Million dollars is pretty strong motive for murder,” adds Marcus (Jon Michael Hill) in the promo clip.

Sherlock and Joan, however, may have a hard time catching the murderer as the synopsis reveals that the perpetrator of the crime is a war criminal who may be the most skilled killer the crime-solving duo has ever pursued. “In all our years together, we’ve never seen a more accomplished killer,” Sherlock comments in the preview clip.

Also in this week’s episode, Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) reaches out to Joan for the first time since he assaulted Sherlock in Season 5, episode 18. In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Rob Doherty said that Shinwell “has the temerity to approach Joan and ask for a favor” after severely beating her partner. “He realizes that to move up into the upper echelon of the gang (SBK) … someone has to go,” Doherty said. So Shinwell is going to ask Joan to look for evidence that will prove that a particular lieutenant of the gang “committed a felony that will put him behind bars and allow Shinwell to ascend.”

“Elementary” Season 5, episode 22 airs on Sunday, May 7 at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
