Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) and Joan (Lucy Liu) will investigate the murder of a reality show contestant in Season 5, episode 22 of “Elementary.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “Moving Targets,” Sherlock and Joan suspect that the victim was murdered by another competitor on the same game show. “We’re looking for a sore loser on a game show,” Sherlock says in the trailer for the episode.

“Million dollars is pretty strong motive for murder,” adds Marcus (Jon Michael Hill).

Sherlock and Joan, however, may have a hard time catching the murderer as the synopsis reveals that the perpetrator of the crime is a war criminal who may be the most skilled killer the crime-solving duo has ever pursued. “In all our years together, we’ve never seen a more accomplished killer,” Sherlock comments in the preview clip.

Also in this week’s episode, Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) reaches out to Joan for the first time since he assaulted Sherlock in Season 5, episode 18. In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Rob Doherty said that Shinwell “has the temerity to approach Joan and ask for a favor” after severely beating her partner. “He realizes that to move up into the upper echelon of the gang (SBK) … someone has to go,” Doherty said.

He then asked Joan to look for evidence that will prove that a particular lieutenant of the gang “committed a felony that will put him behind bars and allow Shinwell to ascend.”

In episode 18, Sherlock was convinced that Shinwell killed his friend and fellow SBK member, Jameel Clark. But before Sherlock could turn Shinwell in to the authorities, Shinwell ambushed him in the street and made a confession. “You want to know who killed Jameel? SBK killed Jameel,” Shinwell revealed to Sherlock after assaulting him. “Leadership cut a deal with a rival gang, and in an exchange for a ceasefire, the gangs agreed to work together to raise the price of the drugs they were pushing. Jameel’s death was a condition. He had taken up with the ex-girlfriend of one of the other gang’s lieutenants. So he had to go.”

Shinwell said that SBK asked one of Jameel’s friends to do it, and apparently, that friend was him. “But SBK lied,” Shinwell said. “They told his friend that he was a traitor. They tricked him.”

Before Shinwell left Sherlock, he let him know that he won’t hesitate to beat him again if he continues to mess with his mission in dismantling SBK. “There’s something you need to know before I go. I’m-a take SBK down. And anybody who get in my way gonna get hurt,” Shinwell said before walking away.

Season 5, episode 22 is directed by Liu. This is the fourth “Elementary” episode the actress has directed. Liu also directed Season 2, episode 22 (“Paint It Black”), Season 3, episode 14 (“The Female of the Species”) and Season 4, episode 22 (“Turn It Upside Down”).

“Elementary” Season 5, episode 22 airs on Sunday, May 7 at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
