“The Vampire Diaries” alum Susan Walters will play Dr. Carla Tannhauser in the upcoming Season 3 of “The Flash.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Dr. Tannhauser is Caitlin’s (Danielle Panabaker) mom , a world-renowned biomedical engineer and CEO of a big research company. Although Caitlin and Dr. Tannhauser share an interest in the field of science, the two have long had a troubled relationship.
Caitlin's mom was first mentioned last season when Caitlin came face-to-face with her Earth-2 doppelganger Killer Frost, who also happens to have a difficult relationship with her own mother.
Panabaker has always wanted to meet her character’s family, and now that Caitlin’s mom is confirmed to debut next season, the 28-year-old actress couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I am SO excited to meet Caitlin's mom #TheFlash,” she tweeted.
"I would like to learn more of Caitlin's family,” Panabaker told Mashable last June when asked what she would like to see in the next installment, “I think we saw a little snippet of Earth-2 Killer Frost's family that allowed Caitlin to open up a little bit more [about her own family, too]. I would like to learn more about Caitlin's mom and her relationship with her mom.”
Walters also took to her Twitter account to reveal how excited she is in joining the show. “I can't wait to join @CWTVFlash and work with @dpanabaker!! #TheFlash," Walters wrote on the microblogging site.
Walters played Carol Lockwood in the first four seasons of “The Vampire Diaries.” Her character was drowned to death by Niklaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) as a way to get back at her son Tyler (Michael Trevino) for betraying him.
Besides “The Vampire Diaries,” Walters also appeared on MTV’s “Teen Wolf,” CBS’ “Star-Crossed,” “Reckless” and “The Young and the Restless,” among many others.
"The Flash" Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
