Ben Warren might not be around Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as often next year. The character is set to appear on the new spinoff of the ABC drama.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, actor Jason George, who is a regular on “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14, has signed on to be a series regular on the still untitled spinoff, which will focus on firefighters.

So what does this mean for Ben Warren? Is he leaving Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)? Is he ditching his medical training to be a firefighter? Well, it’s a bit too early to jump to conclusions. THR noted that Ben will likely still appear on “Grey’s” occasionally.

Ben will not just leave the show suddenly. His reasons for joining the firefighter spinoff will become clear in the first half of Season 14. It’s apparently a “key part of his storyline” in the fall episodes.

It’s worth noting that this might not mean trouble for Ben’s personal life. Even if he did leave his job as a doctor, the spinoff is set in Seattle. Unlike “Private Practice,” which was set in California, it’ll be pretty easy for the show to come up with logical reasons for crossovers.

It might not be surprising that Ben has a sudden interest in firefighters. In the Season 13 finale, he threw on a firefighter’s jacket to head back into the hospital after the explosion. The experience proved to Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) that she needs to leave and see the world outside of the hospital, and it’s likely that she won’t be the only one changed by the massive event.

The actor didn’t hint at much when he posted about the news on Twitter. “Oh, and, um,...this is happening...” he wrote. “The #greysanatomy universe is expanding.”

In any case, expect to see Ben in Season 14. The actor has posted a few behind-the-scenes photos on social media with series regulars Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson) and Sarah Drew (April Kepner).

The firefighter spinoff will debut midseason on ABC, but “Grey’s” fans will get a taste of the show sometime in Season 14. One of the episodes will be a backdoor pilot for the new drama.

ABC ordered the show straight to series in spring. The freshman drama will have 10 episodes and focus on the employees of a firehouse. Much like its sister show, everyone from the newbies to the captain will be explored.

Even without Warren, it’s not like the Grey Sloan operating rooms will be empty. This season, Kim Raver will return as Teddy Altman. The heart surgeon has returned after several years away to help bring Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) home to Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and her husband Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson).

Family will be a recurring theme on “Grey’s Anatomy” once again. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) will see his sister Carina (Stefania Spampinato) arrive at the hospital. She is also a doctor, but she and Andrew might not get along very well.

“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14 premieres Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
