"Wonder Woman" achieved a new milestone at the box office Friday, hitting the $600 million mark worldwide. The superhero film has made history at the box office in what has so far proven to be a rather lukewarm summer season.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, "Wonder Woman" will shatter the highest grossing live-action film developed by a female director. The Warner Bros. venture surpassed comedy-musical "Mamma Mia." The Abba-inspired musical film, starring Meryl Streep and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, previously held the title for the highest-grossing film from a female director after racking up $609.8 million worldwide.

If the "Wonder Woman" box-office momentum continues, it will eclipse "Kung Fu Panda 2," which holds the record for the highest-grossing film by a female director at $665.7 million worldwide.

The summer box office has been weak thus far, producing more flops than blockbusters. However, "Wonder Woman" has proven to be consistent throughout, with steady numbers since it opened in theaters on June 2.

Industry experts expect "Wonder Woman" to easily exceed $700 million worldwide. Entering the summer, the film was projected to make $65 million in its opening weekend.

While "Wonder Woman" has been replaced by Pixar's "Cars 3" as the top film at the domestic box office, it continues to whip the Disney franchise and fellow competitors at the box office.

"Cars 3" debuted at $53 million, which can be viewed as solid returns for the third installment of an animated franchise. However, the recent debut fell short of both "Cars" ($60 million) and "Cars 2" ($66 million). It has also fallen well short of "Wonder Woman," which brought in $103 million.

In the premiere weekend of "Cars 3," "Wonder Woman" hit a box office milestone by raking in $570 million worldwide.

Other films have not fared well. "The Mummy" reboot received poor reviews and managed just $31.7 million in its opening weekend, well short of "Wonder Woman."

"Transformers: The Last Knight" is another installment from a franchise that consistently produced strong box-office returns. However, dismal reviews have led to weak results thus far. The fifth film, which debuted June 20, has only pulled in $22.7 million domestically. "Transformers" has a shot at performing well in the international market, yet "Wonder Woman" could top it this weekend in North America.

"Wonder Woman" also outperformed her fellow Justice League member Superman, whose domestic box office numbers halted at $291 million with "Man of Steel."

Although "Wonder Woman" has proved to be a box office hit, its numbers may not hold up once real competition sets in later this summer.

"War of the Planet of the Apes," "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Despicable Me 3" are set to perform well at the box office this summer. "Despicable Me 3" makes its theatrical debut next weekend, which could overshadow "Wonder Woman."

"Minions," a spinoff within the '"Despicable Me" franchise, debuted at $115 million — "Wonder Woman" fell $12 million short of that.

"Wonder Woman" does have a shot at becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. After the summer box office wraps up, "Thor: Ragnarok," "Justice League" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" could prevent "Wonder Woman" from finishing near the top.

"Wonder Woman" is the third highest-grossing film at the domestic box office this year at $293 million. "Beauty and the Beast" ($503.5 million) and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" ($377.2 million) are the only films to have outgrossed "Wonder Woman."
