It's not even a week since the release of Apple iOS 5, and we already have Redsn0w 0.9.9b5, a tethered jailbreak, compatible with all devices running iOS 5 -- except for the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.

With the tethered jailbreak, the user needs to reconnect the device to a Windows or Mac computer each time it needs to be booted. It may be annoying if the battery dies, as the device has to be reconnected to a computer to recover the jailbreak application. But an untethered jailbreak allows the device to be powered without computer assistance. So what about an untethered jailbreak for the iOS 5?

According to numerous reports, iOS hackers and jailbreakers have already found a way to make an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak. It has also been claimed that jailbreakers have managed to find many exploits that are expected to allow them to jailbreak the new iPhone 4S.

A report, published in thegadgets, said that Joshua Hill aka @p0sixninja, the key hacker of Chronic Dev Team, is working on an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iOS 5 and that the progress is going along nicely. The untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S would also be compatible with older device, running iOS 5, said the report.

Another report by Cult of Mac said that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is already covered, even before the release of the latest Apple OS went public.

The news about the untethered jailbreak on iOS 5 comes from the jailbreaker known as i0n1c. Stefan Esser aka @i0n1c tweeted: As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :p

After the first tweet, he followed with three more tweets:

I will also not confirm or deny an iOS 5 untether from @p0sixninja and @pod2g.

I will also not confirm or deny a iOS 5 untether from @0xcharlie and @dinodaizovi.

I will neither confirm nor deny an iOS 5 untether from @msuiche and @thegrugq.

The infamous hacker i0n1c was behind the iOS 4.3.1, 4.3.2, and 4.3.3 untethered jailbreaks.

Although he didn't confirm it, he was likely referring to the Chronic Dev team. The group of jailbreakers recently announced that they have found five userland jailbreak exploits that will work on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 5.

iOS 5 Untethered on iPhone 3GS Using Snowbreeze 2.8 Beta 8

According to thegadgets, you can also use Snowbreeze to perform an untethered jailbreak on iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom. If you've got an iPhone 3GS and you want it untethered, Jailbreak it with sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 8, there are no additional steps, the report said. This untethered jailbreak allows the user to stay jailbroken on power off or reboot. The user doesn't need to connect to a computer to boot.

The report further added that the untethered jailbreak for other devices is under process.

Watch Out for Fakes

At a time when jailbreaking iOS 5 is creating a buzz in the tech world, some people have posted videos or links showing new jailbreaks that don't even exist. If no canonical blogger or hacker has verified it, then the video or link is more likely to be a fake.
