U.S. President Barack Obama took heat for likening ISIS to a “JV team” in a January article in the New Yorker. While Republicans have accused the president of not taking the Islamic militant group seriously enough, especially in the wake of the beheading of American journalist James Foley last week, at least one GOP congressman said he believes the concern over the Islamic State’s threat to the U.S. is excessive. U.S. Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-Calif., called the group formerly known as ISIS “a bunch of guys wearing pajamas” in an interview with Fox News Tuesday.

“ISIS in Iraq and Syria is not an existential threat to us. They’re not going to harm the United States,” Hunter said while appearing on Fox News to discuss the killing of American Islamic State member Douglas McAuthur McCain, who died in a fight with a rebel group in Syria. “They’re bad guys, yes, if you’re there. But a bunch of guys wearing pajamas pushing up logs -- they are not an existential threat to us like North Korea is, like Iran is, like Pakistan is. They are not like that. The only threat that lies with them is if they can get people back in the United States to do harm to us here and commit acts of terror.”

Hunter said the U.S. should secure the southern border to prevent terrorists from getting into the country and start denying visas “in totality to people from the Middle East,” unless they are persecuted Christians.

“But we got to just say, ‘Time out. Stop. Hold the Game,’” he said.
