A 24 hour labor strike organized by educational and public sector unions ended Thursday evening. Hundreds of thousands of workers across the country protested a government-proposed pension plan that would raise the retirement age while cutting retirement benefits for public workers.

The strike was relatively peaceful although there were scattered clashes in London between Anarchic youths and police. According to reports, 37 people were arrested.

The strike was led by by four major academic and public service unions and closed or partially closed two-thirds of public schools and universities in England and Wales.

People have gathered at key places all over the country. In London, there were demonstrations at Trafalgar Square, as well as in Charing Cross, Whitehall and Westminster.
