Lady Gaga may have been out of this world at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), but her outfits were made of something very down to earth: paper!

Gaga revealed just before the show that all of her gravity defying 2011 EMA outfits were made entirely of paper for a reason.

It was inspired by the idea of the paper moon because there was a moon on stage tonight, Gaga told UK radio station Capital FM.

Created by Paco Rabbanne, her outlandish outfits included a spiraling, galactic silver dress with an oversized hat that completely covered her face.

Thank you to Studio of PACO RABANNE for dressing me in their Paper Garments (sic), she wrote on her Twitter page.

Gaga previously took to her Twitter page to show her EMAs rehearsal ahead of the show in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The daring, 25-year-old songstress revealed that her on-stage outfits were not finalized until hours before the event.

Warming up with my choreographer Richard Jackson, singing + pinning garments till the last moment. So excited for The Night, gonna Marry It, she tweeted.

Sunday night's show was the first time Gaga performed Marry The Night live in Europe.

Gaga was one of the night's biggest winners, picking up four awards, including Best Female, Best Song (Born This Way), Best Video (Born This Way) and Best Fans.

The Selena Gomez-hosted show was predictably eventful. The evening was full of surprises including a streaker, a takeover by the nominated men, a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, and, of course, the glittery performance by Lady Gaga.
