“We start out in 2017, obviously,” executive producer Phil Klemmer said of where Season 3 picks up. “But we’re going to take a trip back to Ancient Rome. We’re going to have Simon Merrells — he played Julius Caeser’s [patron Crassus] on ‘Spartacus’ — who’s going to be playing Julius Caesar on our show.”

Merrells, who is also known for his roles in Syfy’s “Dominion,” CW’s “The Tomorrow People” and British soap opera “Family Affairs,” is the latest addition to the growing list of newcomers to Season 3 of “Legends of Tomorrow.” Other previously announced new cast members include Tala Ashe (“American Odyssey”) as Muslim hacktivist Zari Adrianna Tomaz, Billy Zane (“Titanic”) as iconic showman P.T. Barnum, Tracy Ifeachor (“The Originals”) as Amaya’s granddaughter Kuasa, Jes Macallan (“Mistresses”) as Time Bureau special agent Ava Sharpe and Maisie Richardson-Sellers’ real-life mom, Joy Richardson (“Holby City”), as a mysterious woman from Amaya’s (Richardson-Sellers) past.

In addition to his stint on “Legends of Tomorrow,” Merrells will also be seen next on History’s historical fiction series “Knightfall” — which is set to premiere sometime this year — and in 2018’s crime-horror film “Devilish Deeds.”

In related news, “Legends of Tomorrow” executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently revealed on Twitter that Season 3, episode 3 is titled “Zari.”

As the title implies, it looks like the episode will tell the origin story of Zari. Tomaz revealed at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday that the Legends will meet Zari for the first time in 2042, which is a pretty bleak dystopian police state. According to the actress, her character will challenge the Legends “to improve history and not just fix” it. “There will be some tension there,” Tomaz said (via Entertainment Weekly) of Zari’s initial dynamic with the Legends. “She’s also very guarded because of what she has to do in her world, so she’s reticent to go into the fold of the Legends at first.”

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
