“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 will have more episodes than the show’s freshman and sophomore runs.

In a recent interview with Collider, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the upcoming season of the CW series will have 18 episodes. “It’s funny. Season 1 was 16. Season 2 was 17. [And] Season 3 is gonna be 18. Slowly building up I suppose,” Guggenheim said, before explaining why he thinks 18 is “probably” the most number of episodes they can do in one season.

“It’s a very very very ambitious show compared to the other shows because of its ensemble nature,” Guggenheim said of “Legends of Tomorrow.” Although the show’s “budget is pretty similar to the other super-powered” series, the exec producer said that the show’s distinct production challenges make it hard for them to do 23 episodes every season.

“Every week we have to create a time period,” Guggenheim said. “And every week we’ve gotta have all these different super powers on display. On ‘Flash,’ he’s just running fast. On ‘Supergirl’ she’s flying. But [on ‘Legends of Tomorrow’] we have three characters who fly … and in fun last year, we had a guy who is running fast. The nature of the show is you’ve got all the different visual effects gags that all the shows do …, plus time travel, plus historical accuracy, plus new costumes, new locations. It’s madness.”

When asked what the Season 3 theme is, Guggenheim said that it’s about “growing up.” “We’re never going to have anyone grow up too much,” Guggenheim assured the fans. “But our characters are kind of like Peter Pan, and the Waverider is their Neverland. And over the course of the season, everyone — [while being] true to their character and also true to the tone of the show — will confront the issue of growing up.

Guggenheim added that the show continues to be insane in Season 3. “We’re keeping what works. In fact, we’re doubling down on just the level of insanity,” he said. “And it’s fun, we’re gonna go to a circus in the 1800s. We’re going to Victorian London. We’re doing our send-up, sort of ‘Penny Dreadful’ kind of episode. We’re doing golden age of Hollywood, which is a lot of fun, We’re gonna be back to Aruba.”

As previously reported, Season 3, episode 1 is partly set in Aruba, where Mick (Dominic Purcell) is having his well-deserved vacation after a new group of time masters, the Time Bureau, forces the Legends to go back to their normal lives.

In a trailer for Season 3, Mick is sunbathing on a beach in Aruba when he’s suddenly approached by Julius Caesar (Simon Merrells). While Mick doesn’t immediately realize that Caesar is actually an anachronism, executive producer Phil Klemmer told DC Legends TV last month that Mick is actually the first Legend to find out that the Time Bureau isn’t really that effective in fixing time. Apparently, Mick’s discovery that the Time Bureau has missed an anachronism leads the Legends to re-assemble and jump back to their old job.

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
