LG Electronics announced that the successor to the LG Optimus G will drop its “Optimus” branding and be called the G2. LG said in a press release that the “G” moniker will now apply to all “premium” phones in the company’s lineup.

The LG G2, formerly referred to as the Optimus G2, is expected to be officially unveiled at an event in New York City on Aug. 7. Specifications have not been officially released, and LG has not yet given a price or release date for the device.

A report said that the LG G2 would have a 5.2-inch display. LG presented their “world’s thinnest” LCD technology on a 5.2-inch screen earlier this month, and the International Business Times previously reported on leaked photos, videos and specifications for the device.

What is now known as the LG G2 is rumored to contain a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor chipset with built-in 4G LTE Advanced capability, upwards of 3 GB of RAM. The leaked video also shows the LG G2 (then called the Optimus G2) as having volume rocker buttons on the back. The specs and leaks are not yet confirmed as being official and likely will not be until the LG G2 is officially unveiled in August.

LG also said on Thursday that the company plans to release a series of higher-end smartphones with the “G” branding, but existing branding for previously released mobile devices will “remain unchanged.” The company will also release future devices under a separate naming scheme called “Vu:” with a 4:3 aspect ratio, making them shorter than many wide-screen mobile devices on the market.
