The LG G3 was unveiled in London on Tuesday with a focus on simplicity. The catchphrase for the new smartphone is “Simple is the new smart.”
According to Dr. Ramchan Woo, head of smartphone planning, LG Electronics (066570:Korea SE) listened closely to consumer requests when it developed the G3 and focused on three major elements: display, camera and design.
“What you wanted was not complexity but more simplicity,” Woo said. “Smartphones rely on complicated technology, but we don’t want to [have to] read the manual.”
The LG G3 is one of the first devices to have a Quad HD (2560x1400) display. Its 5.5-inch QHD ISP display has a 538ppi pixel density for better true-to-life visualization than in previous models. Despite its relatively large screen, the LG is compact with a 74.5mm frame that's closer in size to a smartphone with a 5.1-inch display. It's compact because the design does away with the bulk usually associated with large-display devices. The display on the LG G3 encompasses 76.4 percent of the device’s front.
To accommodate its power-consuming high-resolution display, the 33000mAh includes 3A adaptive optimization, which refines the LG G3’s internal functions, such as frame rate, clocking and timing control, to make the battery 20 percent more efficient than the standard smartphone battery.
The LG G3 features a 13-megapixel laser autofocus camera with advanced optical image stabilization technology. The laser on the LG G3 can focus on an image in just .276 milliseconds, which is faster than the human eye can focus on an image.
Also, the camera on the LG G3 makes capturing selfie photos simple. A user need only raise his or her hand to the camera to indicate intention to take a selfie. The camera will count down to allow the user to strike a pose.
The design of the LG G3 includes a metallic skin with matte overlay to keep the G3 clean and fingerprint free. Its floating arch design makes handling the G3 easier, and its rear keys have been enhanced from the previous LG G2 to be more accessible. The LG G3 features a simple and flat graphic user interface, focusing on a clean and minimal look with a “circle as the graphic” motif. A circle on the G3's homescreen is the focus of its graphic design. The color scheme selected shies away from glaring primary colors and focuses on more sophisticated, darker colors, to give users a more relaxing viewing experience.
The LG G3 includes three primary software features: smart keyboard, smart notice and smart security. The LG G3 accessories include its Quick Circle flip cover, its hassle-free wireless charger and its Tone Infinim Bluetooth headset; the device has two companion devices, the G-Pad tablet and the G-Watch smart watch.
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), Sprint Co. (NYSE: S), T-Mobile US Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) have confirmed that they will all begin carrying the LG G3 this summer.
