On Thursday, May 19 China admitted that the Three Gorges Dam has caused a range of environmental problems that require immediate action. The dam was the world's largest dam project; displacing over a million Chinese since construction began in 1994. China's State Council said in a statement on its website that the $23 billion dam had provided huge comprehensive benefits, but also numerous problems that were urgently in need of resolution. Today's statement was the first time the central government acknowledged problems, saying that it needs to prevent geological disasters and help the people who've been forced to move.
