Could the mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather finally happen?

Mayweather (41-0, 25KO) has turned down Pacquiao's (53-3, 38KO) offer several times because he wants random blood testing to be conducted his way or no way.

According to Top Rank's Bob Arum, the Philippine Pride is no longer in negotiations with Saul Canelo Alvarez to fight for a promised $65 million.

Pacquiao then went on yet another quest to sign a fight with Pretty Boy Floyd. Mayweather refused $65 million to fight Pacquiao and instead, he announced that he will fight the WBC Welterweight Champion, Vicious Victor Ortiz (29-2, 22KO) this September.

However, Mayweather taking on Ortiz, a southpaw, raises suspicions that fighting this year could be a tune-up for Pacquiao since Mayweather has not fought since May 2010. This may indicate that he is preparing for another southpaw - a mega fight with Pacquiao.

Recently, Ortiz proved to be a top-class fighter after he won by a unanimous decision over Andre Berto, and became the WBC Welterweight champion.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao is scheduled to face Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5, 38KO) in November for the WBO Welterweight Championship. This will mark the third time Pacquiao faces Marquez. The first bout in 2004 resulted in a draw, and Pacquiao won a split decision in 2008.

Pacquiao is no doubt ready to go toe to toe with the undefeated Mayweather.

But for Mayweather, is timing everything?

Pacquiao and Mayweather are the best pound for pound in the fight game. This is the fight everyone wants to see.

Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have fast hands, but with different stances. Given how his former opponents have described him, Pacquiao is arguably faster with a harder punch. But Mayweather is probably the best defensive boxer in the world.

Mayweather uses the speed of his heavy hands and quick footwork to his advantage. When Mayweather punches his opponent, it is quality over quantity. He punches when he knows it will land and breaks down his opponent.

With both fighters' concentration on upcoming bouts, we are going to have to wait and see if Mayweather's bout with Ortiz is part of his game plan to face Pacquiao in a highly anticipated 2012 fight.

Let's hope, because this is the duel the boxing world desperately wants.
