McDonald's Corp., the world's largest hamburger chain said Monday its same-store sales rose 7.1 % in January; due to demand for McDonald's core menu and breakfast items.

According to reports quoted by the Associated Press, U.S., sales at stores open for at least 13 months rose 5.4 % during the month.

Overseas, same-store sales rose 7.1 % in Europe, the U.K., France and Russia, and rose 10.2 % in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Africa.

McDonald's continues to appeal to customers as we offer high quality, affordable meal options and unparalleled convenience, Chief Executive Jim Skinner said in a statement.

He added same-store sales in February will be hurt by 4 percentage points since February 2008 was a leap year.

Total sales in January rose 2.6 %.
