Tom Hardy (R) stars in George Miller's new movie, "Mad Max: Fury Road." It's just one of the many movies coming soon to a theater near you in May. Warner Bros. Pictures

April showers bring May action movies? Well, there are also a lot of love stories and even a comedy or two to look out for at your local movie theater. From a romantic costume drama starring Carey Mulligan to a smart suspenseful western starring Michael Fassbender, here are just a few of the top movies coming soon to a theater near you:

1. “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” May 1
The highly anticipated follow-up to “The Avengers” brings back the crew of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner. There will be explosions.

2. “Far From the Maddening Crowd,” May 1
This romantic period piece stars Carey Mulligan as a woman wading between multiple suitors feels like a story in the Jane Austen tradition.

3. “5 Flights Up,” May 8
The adorable paring of Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman in this very New York story has the potential to charm much like “Something’s Gotta Give” over a decade ago. Keaton and Freeman play an elderly couple finally moving out of their East Village apartment after 40 years.

4. “Good Kill,” May 15
Ethan Hawke stars as a pilot embarking on a then-experimental drone program for the military. The “based on a true story” movie is a serious drama about the psychological cost of war.

5. “I’ll See You In My Dreams,” May 15
There is love after 40! This romantic comedy features Blythe Danner as a widower trying to get her groove back who finds an unlikely attraction to a swarthy fellow played by Sam Elliot.

6. “Mad Max: Fury Road,” May 15
Director George Miller returns to the wild world of “Mad Max” with Tom Hardy in the driver’s seat of what looks to be the strangest iteration in the franchise.

7. “Pitch Perfect 2,” May 15
The pitches are back. Anna Kendrick reprises her role as part of the acapella team looking to conquer the international competition.

8. “Slow West,” May 15
The slow burning western yarn featuring Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smit-McPhee is a sharp entry into the indie western rival.

9. “Poltergeist,” May 22
“They’re here…” Once again, a suburban family is terrorized in their home after spirits come out for revenge in this 2015 remake of the 1982 cult horror classic.

10. “Tomorrowland,” May 22
Fasten your seatbelts and keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle. This adventurous foray into another part of the Magic Kingdom stars George Clooney and Brit Robinson as they enter another parallel universe outside Main Street, USA.

11. “San Andreas,” May 29

This movie looks like the modern interpretation of the 1970s disaster exploitation film, “Earthquake.” But with the Rock to save the day, maybe it won’t be terrible.
