An influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi has issued a fatwa to kill Libya’s long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Whoever in the Libyan army is able to shoot a bullet at Mr Gaddafi should do so, Qaradawi told Al-Jazeera television.

Moammar Gaddafi appeared on state television on Tuesday, to dispel rumors that he has left the country.

The besieged dictator said he wanted to show that he was still in Libya and not in Venezuela as reported on Monday.

Al Jazeera reported that at least 61 people have died in Tripoli on Monday where a huge anti-government rally prompted security forces to use fighter jets and live ammunition against unarmed people.

More than 400 people have been killed in the unrest, according to media reports.
