  • NASA detected five asteroids approaching Earth
  • All asteroids will fly past Earth on Tuesday
  • The biggest in the group measures over 190 feet wide

NASA’s automated asteroid tracking system is currently monitoring five asteroids that are expected to approach Earth. According to the data collected by the agency, the approaching asteroids will safely fly past Earth on Tuesday (May 5).

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) identified the first asteroid that will zip past the planet tomorrow as 2020 HS9. As indicated in CNEOS’ database, this asteroid has an estimated diameter of 171 feet.

It is currently moving across the Solar System at a speed of almost 41,000 miles per hour. 2020 HS9 is expected to fly past Earth on May 5 at 2:33 a.m. EDT from a distance of about 0.01183 astronomical units or 1.1 million miles away.

Trailing behind 2020 HS9 is an asteroid known as 2020 HR8. This asteroid measures about 79 feet wide and is moving towards Earth at an average velocity of almost 22,000 miles per hour.

According to CNEOS, 2020 HR8 will visit Earth’s neighborhood on May 5 at 5:01 a.m. EDT. During this time, the asteroid will be about 0.02319 astronomical units from the planet’s center, which is equivalent to around 2.2 million miles away.

The third asteroid that will fly past Earth on Tuesday is known as 2020 HZ6. CNEOS estimated that this asteroid measures about 184 feet wide and is flying towards Earth at a speed of over 48,000 miles per hour.

2020 HZ6 is expected to approach Earth on May 5 at 5:32 a.m. EDT from a distance of 0.02610 astronomical units or about 2.4 million miles away.

Closely following 2020 HZ6 is an asteroid known as 2020 HL. With an estimated diameter of 194 feet, 2020 HL is the biggest asteroid in the group. According to CNEOS, it is currently approaching Earth at a speed of over 20,000 miles per hour.

2020 HL will carry out its near-Earth flyby on May 5 at 10:24 a.m. EDT. During its approach, the asteroid will be about 0.04281 astronomical units or about 4 million miles from the planet’s center.

The last asteroid that will fly past Earth tomorrow is known as 2020 HF7. This asteroid measures about 121 feet wide and is traveling across space at an average speed of almost 39,000 miles per hour.

According to CNEOS, this asteroid will fly past Earth on May 5 at 12:05 p.m. EDT from a distance of 0.02376 astronomical units or around 2.2 million miles away.
