New Jersey Natural Gas proposed lower rates for its customers in a report filed with the state's Board of Public Utilities today.

If the proposition is approved by state regulators, gas and heating bills from the company would decrease by nearly 10 percent starting October 1. The company said that the average customer can expect savings of about $14 per month.

At a time when it seems like the cost of everything is going up, today's filings represent good news for our customers, chairman and CEO Laurence Downes said in a statement.

New Jersey Natural Gas, a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, primarily serves residents of Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex and Morris counties.
