“Scandal” Season 7 will focus on Mellie Grant’s (Bellamy Young) presidency, and the actress has shared some details about her character’s stint at the Oval Office ahead of the premiere.

While speaking with Us Weekly, Young reminded fans that Mellie only had two lines in the pilot for the hit ABC series, but now she is the leader of the free world. “Now she’ll sit behind the desk in the Oval,” she said.

Young said that Mellie knows that everything she will do and say will be criticized by the public, especially those who did not vote for her in the elections. But since she has Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) by her side, she will feel invincible. “She knows that whatever she does will produce commentary about what she wore or how her hair looked. But she feels invincible with Olivia by her side,” she said.

Meanwhile, “Scandal” will be ending after Season 7, which means fans will be bidding their favorite characters goodbye after 18 episodes. However, the cast also found it difficult to film the last season knowing they would be parting ways soon. When asked if it was difficult to say goodbye to her co-stars of five years, Young admitted, “We cry like twice a day. And I don’t see that stopping.”

At present, Young, Pope and the rest of the “Scandal” cast are still on set filming the upcoming episodes. Last month, Young told Entertainment Weekly that the cast have been feeling torn since they learned that “Scandal” will be canceled after seven seasons.

“Everything is bittersweet. We’re so grateful to be together for another year, but the clock is ticking, so every moment feels precious. These days are magical, and they’re almost over, so we’re just trying to drink as deeply and fully as we can of the magic while it lasts. And we spend a lot of time vowing to be friends forever and making plans together for after we wrap. The show may end, but this family will live on,” she said.

Young is also looking forward to what’s in store for Mellie and how she will tackle her new position in the United States. “I think Mellie is full of optimism, clarity and hope when she takes office,” she said.

“Scandal” Season 7 will premiere on ABC on Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. EDT.
