According E! Online's Mark Malkin, Selena Gomez's new tattoo, her first ever, isn't a heart. The fresh ink on her wrist is in fact a musical note, a tribute to her love of music and song, not a proclamation of love to teen pop sensation Justin Bieber.

At a Women in Film cocktail party, the young Texan singer-actress told Malkin: It's a musical note. Everybody thought it was a heart but it's a little music note.

The news has shocked Bieber fans who believed the tattoo was an expression of the young pop-star couple's mutual love. Instead, the tattoo suggests that the young Disney starlet is more interested in pursuing her career than her love life.

I was named after a singer and music obviously is a big influence for me, Gomez explained to Malkin. And there's music stuff with my mom that means a lot to me, too.

Word of Gomez's tattoo broke on Twitter after an employee of the Hollywood tattoo parlor that she visited Thursday, tweeted a photo of the star showing off her new tat while standing next to her tattoo artist.

The employee, Jordan Sandoval, tweeted: She got a little heart tattoo at Under the Gun, in Hollywood by Louie Gomez.

The message quickly spread across the Internet, and a second tweet from Sandoval read, Phone blew up because I tweeted that @selenagomez got a #tattoo. Her fans get down! Gained some new followers too. Tiny Heart tat. Lol.

In the photo it's hard to make out what the tattoo is, but Sandoval's tweets seem to confirm the heart-shape theory. But Gomez's comments to E! may leave it open to debate just what's on her wrist.

Previously, Gomez had dared to get only a temporary henna tattoo, though even that fueled rumors among her fans that she had gone under the needle. She also flaunted a nonpermanent tattoo with the name Justin on her wrist in 2011, though it was never confirmed that the tattoo was for Bieber. As for Bieber, he wasn't on hand for Gomez's first inking. The young singer confirmed his absence, tweeting from the studio: Another great night in the studio. i love music and creating. working hard on the music. 1 week until the birthday. wild. night world.
