Chyler Leigh has opened up about Floriana Lima’s upcoming exit from “Supergirl.”

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the GLSEN Respect Awards on Friday, Leigh admitted that she was saddened by Lima’s decision to leave the CW series as her departure means the end of the road for Alex (Leigh) and Maggie’s (Lima) love story.

“It strikes a chord very deep within me, and hits me very personally, because I love the story line, I love the relationship,” Leigh said of Alex and Maggie’s journey as a couple. “There’s a lot of technicalities that come into play. There’s only so much you can do when it comes to people’s decisions.”

While it’s unclear how Alex and Maggie’s love story will conclude, it appears that the two will ultimately go their separate ways due to their different views about having kids in the future. At the end of Season 3, episode 3, Maggie made it clear to Alex that she doesn’t want to have children. Although Alex told Maggie that she doesn’t have any problem with that, it’s pretty obvious that the DEO agent prefers to have children of her own.

Regardless of how the show will wrap Alex and Maggie’s love story, “Supergirl” bosses are leaving the door open for Maggie’s potential return. “Yes, definitely,” Lima told Entertainment Weekly when asked if she would be interested in reprising her role in the future. “I love this story. I love the cast and the show.”

Chyler and I have a really strong bond,” Lima added. “I’m so glad that she was the person in the role, because her and I connected really well, we understood what we wanted to accomplish as people for the role, and we felt very responsible for this story, so I love that Chyler was just as game as I was in trying to make this a meaningful, progressive and hopefully in the smallest way possible — or the grandest way possible — somewhat change the world a little bit.”

Although fans will soon see Alex without Maggie, Leigh said that there are more to explore about her character. “It is another chapter, it really is,” Leigh said. “Alex’s journey is really that she’s still in that moment of Who am I, what do I want, where am I going and how do I get there? Wherever the relationship goes, the biggest thing is understanding that no one is in control of absolutely everything all the time, and we all have to respond and react to whatever comes our way, so she’s in that mode of Where am I right now?”

“Supergirl” Season 3 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
