Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine shot down a Ukrainian government MiG-29 fighter jet in the Luhansk region, according to a military spokesperson quoted by Reuters.

The pilot of the jet ejected and parachuted out and was found, following a search, by Ukrainian forces, according to Agence France-Presse.

The downing of the jet comes as a Russian convoy, which the Kremlin claims is carrying humanitarian aid, but the Ukrainian and Western governments are concerned could be a pretext for moving military supplies, waits on Ukraine's border with Russia.

Ukraine's pro-Russian separatists have shot down government military aircraft before.
