Fans of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” finally learned what prompted Maggie (Lauren Cohan) to suddenly chop off her hair. Cohan debuted the short pixie cut in December, but of course, kept quiet about how her new look factored into the show.

On Season 6, episode 15, titled “East,” Maggie teased that the haircut was her way of trying to prepare for whatever lies ahead. As recapped, toward the end of the episode Maggie asked Enid (Katelyn Nacon) to help her with one more thing and handed the young girl a pair of scissors. After checking out her short 'do in the mirror, Enid asked Maggie why she wanted to cut her hair.

“I have to keep going,” Maggie said. “And I don’t want anything getting in my way.”

Fans will have to wait to see if Maggie’s drastic new look will also tie into the finale. At first, it was assumed that Cohan’s “Walking Dead” character would be killed off since she cut her hair, but that might not be the case. In Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels, which the TV series is based on, Maggie has a haircut similar to the one the character has now.

While Cohan hasn’t dished about Maggie’s short hair, the 33-year-old actress did recently tease that next week’s finale is the “cliff-hangerist episode” ever. “The biggest finale I’ve ever seen in television,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “In any episode of TV … maybe barring the last episode of ‘The Sopranos.’”

In a synopsis for the finale, titled “Last Day on Earth,” Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group are forced to leave Alexandria and hit the road in order to “save one of their own.” The synopsis also teases that whatever happens to them while on the road will change “their lives forever.” As fans are already aware, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his deadly barbed-wire bat Lucille will make their debut in the finale.

“The Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
