The next installment in the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” series has been canceled. Find out why below.

Sorry “Five Nights at Freddy’s” fans. The next installment after last year’s “Sister Location” has been scrapped by game creator Scott Cawthon. The video game designer’s decision comes as a surprise since he disclosed the cancellation at the same time that he announced the game — tentatively named “Five Nights at Freddy’s 6.”

Why “FNaF 6” Was Canceled

Over the weekend, Cawthon broke the news to the game series’ fans through a post on Steam. At the start of his update, he confirmed the existence of the project by saying, “For the last month or so I’ve been dropping hints about a new game; and it’s true that I’d been working on one (call it ‘FNaF 6’ if you’d like).”

Cawthon then explained why the upcoming sequel won’t materialize anytime soon. “After forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something — I just don’t want to work on this. With each game’s release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so.”

The game creator admitted that the pressure is taking a toll on him. “Each game should be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I’ve been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.”

Cawthon revealed in his post that given the situation he is currently in, he’s decided to stop working on “Five Nights at Freddy’s 6.” He noted that he is not going to disclose more details as of this time. Nevertheless, he made it clear that this does not mean that he is done and is fully abandoning “FNaF.” He’s just taking a break from it while going back to his roots and finding “what made game-making enjoyable in the first place.”

In the end, he thanked all those who supported the “FNaF” series. He also asked everyone to respect and understand his decision, since he now yearns to spend more time with his family. Cawthon also stated that he’ll give more updates in the near future.

Publicity Stunt?

Cawthon appears to be very serious with his decision in his latest update. However, this isn’t the first time that he is claiming to have scrapped or canceled a game in his hit survival horror video game series. Two years ago, he also posted on Steam that “FNaF 3” had been canceled right after a hacker leaked the game.

Cawthon’s statement turned out to be a joke at the time. Apparently, the download link of the alleged leaked “FNaF” installment led users to a clone of “There Is No Pause Button,” which was one of Cawthon’s previous games. Given this, Eurogamer says that Cawthon’s announcement last Saturday could be another joke or just a promotional stunt for the release of “Sister Location’s” sequel.

Meanwhile, it’s also possible that this isn’t just a publicity stunt. “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has undeniably gone on too long, and the sequels did not get as much positive feedback than the original game. Even the movie version of the game that’s being created by Blumhouse has been facing roadblocks and delays. Still, Cawthon maintains that “there are some big things in the works elsewhere.”
