Zooey Deschanel is the embodiment of quirky-cute style and she is quickly becoming America's sweetheart.

After her 2003 role opposite Will Farrell in the Christmas comedy Elf, Deschanel has become a household name known for her eclectic fashion choices, her upbeat personality and her piercing blue eyes. She is now the star of FOX's New Girl, was nomianted for a Golden Globe award and is great friends with hunky actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. But the superstar insists that things have not always been easy.

The 30-year-old actress appears on the February 2012 cover of Allure magazine and gave a candid interview about her childhood. Girls spit in my face, Deschanel told Allure magazine for the February issue. People were so mean to me. I'd cry every day.

Unfortunately, things did not change in college. I went to Northwestern because I had gone to a really nontraditional high school. I was like, 'It'd be cool to have a traditional college experience,' Deschanel, 32, explained. Then I was like, 'Oh, but none of these people understand what's cool about me. My specialness is not appreciated in this place.'

I've always straddled a weird line -- there's a lot of mainstream stuff that I love, she added. At the same, I still feel like an outsider. I'm the outsider who's on the inside.

It is hard to not notice her outside, though. The beautiful starlet is a fashion and style icon to many. Zooey Deschanel's red carpet style at the 2012 Golden Globes on Sunday was one of the most-talked about on Monday morning. She looked ravishing in couture Prada. Her gown featured a glittering lime-colored bodice and long flowing back skirt. She donned her hair in a sexy 60s-chic coif with blunt bangs and copped sideburns. She lined the inner rim of her bright blue eyes with white eyeliner; this made the blue really pop.

All of that sounds extra-glamorous but who would Deschanel be without adding her quirky flair? The actress donned nails complete with little black and white tuxedos. It was a fun, unpredictable addition to an otherwise ready-carpet ready ensemble.

I'm bangs and eyes, Deschanel told Allure. It's who I am. There have been periods when I've grown my bangs out, but I always cut them back, so it's like, why go through the trouble?

Zooey does not try extreme diets like many of the other young women in Hollywood, but she stays healthy by eating vegetables, grains and proteins.

Some people around me, they're like 89 pounds, she said. I'm not going to say I'm a big girl. I'm a very small person but I'm a healthy weight. That might be a little weird for Hollywood.

Deschanel marches to the beat of her own drum. And to her critics, she says: If you feel like dressing like a girl, there's nothing wrong with that. I don't know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking: 'I need to act like a man' or 'I need to tone it down to be successful.' That's a very good way to keep women down.

Despite all of the hype surrounding her, she remains humble. 'It' girl is supposed to be something that only lasts a certain amount of time, she said. They keep calling me an 'It' girl and at this points it makes me laugh, because they've done that so many times: 'You're it,' 'You're not it.'
