A 10-month-old girl died after falling out of her mother’s car and then being accidentally run over by the car, police announced on Monday.

The infant’s mother, a 35-year-old unidentified woman from Hyattsville, Maryland, was visiting family in Woodbridge, Virginia on Sunday. According to the Associated Press, the mother placed her daughter in the backseat of her 2013 Toyota Highlander, unrestrained, and drove a short distance to throw trash into a dumpster. When she returned to her relative’s home, a family member opened the back door and the baby fell out of the SUV.

The mother then got out of the vehicle to check on the baby, but the vehicle’s transmission was still in drive, and the car rolled forward onto the child, causing her to suffer from a serious head injury.

Prince William County police revealed in a statement that they responded to a call at Flotilla Way and Dyer Mills Court at 1:15 p.m. about a car accident involving a child.

“The child sustained a serious head injury and was transported to the hospital by her mother where police were notified,” the statement said.

The baby died later in the day while at the hospital. The case is being investigated, but no charges have been filed as of yet. The identity of the mother and her child are both being kept confidential.
