KEY POINTS

  • PetSmart is recalling about 100,300 dog bowls
  • An issue with their gasket can pose laceration hazards
  • Cuts are one of the most common safety hazards at home

PetSmart has recalled dog bowls sold at its stores because of a laceration hazard.

The voluntary recall involves 100,300 units of the Top Paw Double Diner Dog Bowl. They come with two metal bowls that are elevated from the ground by a metal base, a recall alert posted on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website noted.

The problem is that the gasket at the bottom can come off and the unfinished edges can then pose potential laceration risks, the agency said. PetSmart has received three reports of scratches and cuts on consumers' hands after using the product.

The recalled dog bowls were sold at PetSmart stores nationwide and also on its online platform from October 2017 to June 2021. They have a dog paw print design at the front and have the SKU number 5270098 and UPC number 73725775404 printed on the underside wall of the product, CPSC noted.

Those who have purchased the affected product should stop using it and return it to any PetSmart store to get a full refund. A photo of the product is available at the PetSmart website.

"No other products are affected by this recall," the company said.

Cut hazards

Cuts are one of the most common safety hazards at home, along with falls, poisoning, drowning and fire hazards, SafeWise said. This is because there are many common objects that seem simple but actually have sharp edges both inside and outside the home. For instance, both a garden rake and an open food can pose cut risks.

And in the hands of children, such sharp objects can be particularly dangerous, the National Home Security Alliance said.

People should keep such sharp objects away from children, preferably in locked drawers, to keep their homes safe from cut hazards. Even something as simple as placing sharper edges of objects, such as forks and knives, downward in the dishwasher can help make them less accessible to kids.
