KEY POINTS

  • The young girl allegedly woke her parents up at their Tulsa residence in the middle of the night Thursday
  • The victim was rushed to a hospital but later died
  • The boy's sister was arrested, and is being held at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice

A 12-year-old Oklahoma girl was arrested after she reportedly stabbed her 9-year-old brother to death in the middle of the night Thursday, police said.

The young girl allegedly woke her parents up at their Tulsa residence shortly before midnight and told them that she had stabbed her little brother, according to police.

Emergency officials who responded to the location performed CPR on the boy at the River Bank Plaza Apartments complex before rushing him to the hospital, where he was immediately delivered into surgery. However, the boy died shortly after 2:30 a.m., police said.

The boy's sister was arrested, and is being held at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice, the New York Post reported.

The weapon used was a knife, while the motive for the killing was not revealed by the police.

"Intent is going to be a key component that the court system will have to work out," Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg told Fox 23. "Obviously we did some interviews, but interviews with a 12-year-old are very preliminary."

"This, unfortunately, has no easy end or easy path, this is going to be a long convoluted process that's going to be extremely taxing on everyone involved in this," he continued.

The family's identity was not disclosed.

Meanwhile, a neighbor interviewed by the news outlet Friday afternoon delivered a message to the victim's mother, "Just be strong, I know it's easy for someone that it hasn't happened to, to say that, but just be strong, keep your faith, and just don't give up on your daughter, don't give up on her at all."

The incident is the second homicide and the second sibling killing reported in the city of Tulsa in 2023. On Jan. 3, 39-year-old Clifton Speed shot and hit older brother Byron Speed multiple times during a prolonged "family scuffle," Tulsa World reported.

Clifton required hospitalization and surgery due to the injuries he sustained in the fight but is expected to make a full recovery. After he is discharged, he will be arrested on a complaint of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm, police said.
