A man in India allegedly stabbed a 20-year-old woman with a screwdriver 51 times, killing her because she stopped talking to him.

The victim's brother found the deceased woman lying in a pool of blood after the suspect fled the scene, officials said Tuesday.

The horrific incident took place in Korba, a city located in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The suspect, identified as Shadab Khan, 24, and the victim reportedly knew each other for years before the woman stopped talking to him, according to Indian Express.

On the day of the murder, Khan entered the woman's house when no one was around and attacked her as she was sleeping.

The man allegedly used a pillow to cover the victim's mouth so her cries for help would be muffled. He then used a screwdriver to repeatedly stab the woman.

The victim was left with fatal injuries while Khan escaped. Her brother later arrived at the house and found the woman dead in a pool of blood, local police said.

Investigators eventually learned that the suspect and the victim became friends about three years back, the Times of India reported. The woman was a regular commuter on a bus that the suspect used to work in at the time, officials said.

When the man later moved to another state for work, he remained in touch with the victim. However, the woman eventually stopped talking to the man and did not pay heed to his advances. Things became sour, and the suspect even reportedly threatened the victim's parents because of the altercation between them.

The man is said to have taken a flight and traveled several miles back to the state of Chhattisgarh before the brutal murder.

After the woman's body was found, local police registered a case against Khan and began searching for the suspect.

A similar incident was reported earlier this month after a California man allegedly stabbed his sister multiple times while she was 8 months pregnant. N-Kya Rebecca Logan, 26, was stabbed in the belly by Aaron Jamal Dudley, 41, who then took her body to an alley and set it on fire. Dudley was arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
