In a disturbing incident, a young mother threw her daughter out the toilet window of her flat right after giving birth. Authorities said the baby girl was found unresponsive on a ventilation duct Tuesday.

The 16-year-old unidentified girl lived with her parents in a housing society in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. On Tuesday, some residents spotted the baby on the ventilation duct of one of the buildings. They rushed her to a private hospital but she was declared dead.

Police detained the mother for questioning. A preliminary investigation revealed that the teenager hid her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. After giving birth to the baby inside the toilet, she threw the child out of the window. The baby suffered severe head and shoulder injuries, police said.

"We checked all CCTV cameras but we didn't find anything, so we're sure that it was someone from the society who had committed the crime. While checking the duct area windows, we found bloodstains on the second floor grille," officer Abhijeet Tailor told Mid-Day News.

"Later, we took the girl into custody and discovered that she had a boyfriend. We brought him, too, to the police station. During interrogation, the girl finally revealed the truth. She said she had hidden her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. We are interrogating her boyfriend," Tailor added.

Police have sent the newborn baby's body for an autopsy, the Hindustan Times reported.

In another case of child abandonment, a newborn baby with his umbilical cord still attached was found dumped in the bushes near a village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh last week. Wild animals and dogs were seen nibbling the infant baby boy. The child was rushed to a government hospital and received treatment for his injuries. It was not clear who abandoned the baby.
