The huge brand new cruise ship owned by MSC Cruises crashed into the pier in Palermo, Italy and suffered some damage.

MSC Grandiosa weighing 181, 000 ton was christened in early November this year. The ship was on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise that departed Civitavecchia, Italy on December 29.

However, no injuries for passengers or crew had been reported. MSC Grandiosa is the second largest ship in the world based on capacity.

Crashed during docking

According to the information available, the giant vessel was trying to dock at the Port of Palermo on the island of Sicily in Italy around 8:30 AM on Monday when it hit the Vittorio Veneto pier, according to Cruisehive report.

High winds probably caused the ship to hit the corner of the pier. The footage posted online had some broad details.

A report by the Sun said the big vessel initially appeared to be in position while docking.

But instead of stopping the vessel, it was seen turning until the rear of the ship scraped the wall of the dock. In the process, part of the wall crumbled and left a huge dent at the point where the ship hit.

In the crash, some visible damages were also caused to the vessel’s hull, the report said.

According to Daily Mail, one passenger Ian Lewis joked on social media that a “bit of T-cut on there will look good as new.”

The ship departs

Per the latest news update, the MSC cruise ship has departed the port at around 5:00 PM implying there is no major impact on the current voyage. The ship's scheduled port of calls includes Valetta, Malta on Tuesday.

MSC Grandiosa is a Meraviglia Plus class vessel and can carry 6,334 guests and 1,704 crew members. The ship was received by MSC Cruises on October 31, 2019.

The luxury vessel also owes its fame to cabins with individual hot tubs. The ship also boasts of spas and numerous shops. Cirque de Soleil shows as onboard entertainment also make the cruise ship stand out.

In recent weeks, among the cruise ship crashes reported also included Carnival Cruise ships Glory colliding with Legend in Cozumel, Mexico.

MSC Cruise ships also had similar accidents. They included two MSC ships crashing in the Buenos Aires port in February this year. Last year MSC Armonia crashed into the pier at Isla Roatan, Honduras and damaged the pier badly.
