  • Police said the mother died of a drug overdose
  • The child was found on top of his mother's body
  • His fingers were raw from trying to eat to survive

A two-month-old baby boy survived alone for days, clinging to his mother's decomposing body in their Kentucky apartment. The child was found gnawing on his hand, as he lay on top of his mother's body.

Danielle Wade, 29, was found dead in her Four Oaks Apartments on Oboe Drive in St. Dennis, Louisville, on Aug. 18, reports WAVE 3.

Adriane Wade, Danielle's mother, last she saw her daughter and her kids was on Aug 13. "Her and her kids were at my house. We went to school. We had a good day. Friday the 13th was funny," Adriane told Wave 3.

According to Adriane, she was instructed by Louisville Metro Police on Aug. 18 to go to her daughter's apartment to identify the body.

When she arrived, Adriane was told that her daughter had been dead for days and her grandson was alive and lying on top of his mother.

"Decomposing for days with her little baby, her little newborn, laying on top of her," Adriane said. She said the child Dreseaun survived by gnawing on his fingers.

"That baby that was in the apartment while she was decomposing, his hand was raw from trying to eat to survive," she added.

On Wednesday, the Louisville Metro Police confirmed that Danielle died of a drug overdose. Dreseaun is currently fine and is undergoing treatment at a hospital for dehydration and injuries sustained from his hand injury. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Adriane thinks it is a miracle that her grandson survived so long without his mother. "It is miraculous because God is involved. It’s very miraculous. He ate his hand raw. (He was) in there for days without survival techniques," she added.

The child will be taken in by his grandmother. Danielle's other children too will also be under the custody of Adriane.

"I can’t believe this is how her week ended,” her mother said. “I can’t believe it happened this quick. Life is so short, and it happened just like that," says Adriane.

Recently, a 4-year-old boy, who was found wandering the streets of Illinois, led police to the dead body of his mother. Police also found a three-year-old child live child inside the house with the mother's body.
