A woman in Jordan has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with her stepson's death. The 2-year-old died after the woman put him in a bathtub of boiling water, prosecutors told a court Monday.

The woman reportedly killed the baby as an act of "revenge" following a brawl with her husband on Oct. 1, 2018. The fight between the woman and her husband started when he asked her to take care of his two children from another relationship. The elder child was four years old.

Court files revealed that she wanted to "take revenge" for being forced to care for the kids. The woman, who was not identified, "would often beat up the children and mistreat them."

On the day of the incident, the defendant got into a heated argument with her husband and decided to "take revenge by killing the victim."

"The defendant prepared boiled water, poured it into the bathtub and placed the victim inside," court documents said, according to Gulf News. The baby started screaming and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors said he had first-degree burns. The boy died a fortnight later.

"The court also depended on contradictory statements by some witnesses, and the court cannot base its ruling on doubts," the defense argued.

Earlier this month, a man in Singapore killed his 4-year-old stepdaughter for urinating outside the toilet bowl. The accused, identified as Muhammad Salihin Ismail, was at the family's rental flat in Bukit Batok when the incident took place.

The autopsy report of the girl, identified as Nursabrina Agustiani Abdullah, revealed that she died of internal bleeding due to blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

Ismail got married to the child's mother in 2016 when the victim was two years old.
