A 4-year-old child died after her stepfather assaulted her for urinating outside the toilet bowl. The incident happened in Singapore.

The accused was identified as Muhammad Salihin Ismail. The incident took place in September 2018 at the family's rental flat in Bukit Batok. A trial for the accused began Tuesday. Authorities said Ismail kicked the girl – identified as Nursabrina Agustiani Abdullah, causing fatal injuries. If convicted, he could get the death penalty or life imprisonment, the Straits Times reported. The girl's autopsy report revealed that she died of internal bleeding due to blunt force trauma of the abdomen.

Prosecutors told the country's high court that the accused admitted to the crime. The man told investigators that he kicked the girl's abdomen while she was on the floor because he wanted to "teach her a lesson" for having "so much problem peeing or passing motion."

Ismail also faces two other charges. Between July and October 2017, he allegedly scalded her with hot water flowing from a showerhead. Prosecutors told the court that the accused was angry as the girl did not want to shower in cold water. But Ismail wanted to save electricity and he insisted her to take bath in cold water. When she denied it, he poured hot water on the child's back for few seconds to teach her a lesson.

Ismail got married to the child's mother, Syabilla Syamien Riyadi, 24, in 2016 when the victim was two years old.

Last month in an incident in India, a father killed his 5-year-old girl as he suspected his wife was having an extramarital affair. Local media reports said the couple used to have frequent fights. On the day of the attack, the husband got furious and in a fit of rage, killed his daughter by strangling her to death. He later admitted to killing the child.
