A 3-year-old in India died after she fell from the door of a moving train. The toddler's father, who jumped out of the train to save his daughter also succumbed to injuries, reports said.

The tragic incident occurred Sunday when the family was traveling through Varanasi, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, The Times of India reported.

The father, Rayin along with his wife, Zarina Khatoon, their toddler girl, and his brother-in-law Firoz boarded the train from Delhi on Saturday. The national capital is located around 720 miles from the family's hometown in the northern Indian state of Bihar.

Since the family could not get seats on the crowded train, they were reportedly sitting near the door when the tragic accident occurred. The toddler fell out from the door while playing and Rayin, who witnessed the accident, jumped behind her in an attempt to save her, reports said.

After the incident, Khatoon pulled the emergency chain to stop the train. The co-passengers then rushed out of the train to rescue the duo. However, the child died on the scene. Rayin was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Officials said they have sent the bodies for autopsy and have informed the relatives, local news outlet The Tribune reported.

In a similar accident last year, a 10-year-old boy from the southern Indian state of Kerala died after falling off a moving train as he mistook the exit door for a toilet. The victim, identified as Muhammad Ishan was traveling with his grandfather and aunt when the accident happened. The child told his grandfather that he was going to the toilet. The granddad, who was asleep at the time, realized a while later that the boy had fallen off the train and immediately pulled the emergency chain to stop it. Residents living near the railway tracks located the child and rushed him to a hospital where he reportedly succumbed to injuries.
