A Russian woman confessed to starving her three-year-old daughter to death by leaving her alone at home and going on a partying spree for a week.

The court heard Monday that 21-year-old Maria Plenkina locked her daughter Kristina in their apartment and went partying on Feb.13 last year. A week later, the toddler’s grandmother, who had come over to the flat to wish the girl on her birthday, found her lying motionless on the floor. The court was told that the girl was so hungry that she tried to eat washing powder. She survived one week by consuming a small amount of yogurt and chicken left in the house.

Anastasia Kurpina, a friend of the accused, told the investigators that when she asked about the victim, Plenkina lied to her that her daughter was being cared for by a friend. Kurpina added that they visited nightclubs daily and she paid for her drinks.

Meanwhile, the girl’s grandmother told the court that she would have looked after the child had she known her daughter’s plans.

“She lied to me that everything was fine. She lied to everyone. I never thought that Maria could do such a thing. If only I had spotted something was wrong, I would have taken the girl to me. She has shown the highest class of professional acting - if you deceive everyone to such an extent. I completely did not know my daughter, it turns out,” she said.

Meanwhile, confessing to the crime in the court, Plenkina said, “I never wanted her to die.” The accused could face up to 20 years in jail for the crime.
