A woman was caught on camera abandoning her newborn baby in a trash can, minutes after delivery. The incident took place in China’s Jiangsu Province Sunday.

In the CCTV footage, the unidentified woman can be seen standing in front of a row of rubbish bins. She then throws a bag into one of them before leaving the scene while holding a few things in her right hand. Two passers-by then stop in front of the bin and take the bag but leave without rescuing the baby. According to local reports, an elderly woman, who was passing by the bins, rescued the baby after hearing his cries.

The woman then took the baby to the hospital that was right next to the trash bins. A medical examination was conducted and the baby was found healthy. The newborn was reportedly abandoned with the umbilical cord still attached to him.

It was not known if charges were filed against the mother. According to the laws in the country, parents could face up to five years imprisonment for abandoning their minor children. Meanwhile, the baby remained in the care of the hospital.

The incident comes less than two months after a man in eastern China's Shandong Province was caught on camera abandoning his son outside a shop. CCTV footage showed the man, identified as 53-year-old Qu, dumping a duffel bag outside the shop and walking away. An hour after the three-year-old boy was abandoned, another man, a worker at the shop, picks the bag up and dumps it in front of a nearby restaurant. Passersby alerted the police after the boy got out of the bag and began crying. Following an investigation, the father of the child was taken into custody.
