  • Zepeda's win over Baranchyk is considered 2020 Fight of the Year
  • Davis makes sensational PPV debut with win over Santa Cruz
  • Povetkin's one punch over Whyte is being hailed as a big comeback story in boxing

2020 will be closing soon and most are hoping for a better 2021. Boxing managed to push through despite the pandemic. There were notable fights to recall, particularly the recently concluded ones from Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.

However, the year was not simply about the Mexican sensation and "Triple G." Here are some of the memorable moments of the sport for 2020.

5. Khalid Yafai vs. Roman Gonzalez

Critics felt that Roman Gonzalez was someone on the downturn. But alas, the 33-year-old proved otherwise and even won the WBA super flyweight title via ninth round TKO over British foe Khalid Yafai in February.

Yafai started well, but “Chocolatito” wore him down with his attacks and body shots. The ploy worked to the Nicaraguan’s advantage, capping it with a huge overhand right that floored the Brit and handing him his first boxing career loss.

4. Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin

It was a clash that needed to be rescheduled due to COVID-19, but the wait was worth it. Alexander Povetkin managed to do the unthinkable after being knocked down twice in the fourth round by Dillian Whyte.

But somehow, the Russian managed to sneak in a vicious uppercut to the British boxer and win the bout via technical knockout. Povetkin needed just one good punch to turn things around, ultimately rewarding him with the WBC interim heavyweight title.

A rematch was supposed to take place in November but got postponed after the Russian tested positive for the coronavirus.

3. Juan Francisco Estrada vs Carlos Cuadras II

Juan Francisco Estrada’s technical knockout win over Carlos Cuadras was another memorable bout that went down on Oct. 23 at the Gimnasio TV Azteca in Mexico City.

“El Gallo” won the rematch against Cuadras to retain the WBC and The Ring super flyweight titles.

It was another action-packed encounter, a perfect prelude to an upcoming second encounter between Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzales in March 2021.

2. Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz

There is no better way to make your pay-per-view debut than scoring an impressive punch. This was what Gervonta Davis did when he knocked Leo Santa Cruz out cold in the sixth round to win the WBA super featherweight title.

The win cemented Davis’ place in the elite circle, not to mention adding another belt to his side. It was an electrifying exchange between the two pugs from the opening bell in their Oct. 31 joust.

1. Jose Zepeda vs Ivan Baranchyk

This showdown is considered to be the fight of the year by pundits. Jose Zepeda notched a knockout victory in the fifth round over Belarusian foe Ivan Baranchyk on Oct. 30 to win the vacant WBC silver light welterweight title.

It was a high-octane duel with both fighters hitting the canvas eight times. In the end, it was the 31-year-old Zepeda having the last laugh, flooring the Belarusian with a perfectly placed left hand.
