It’s that time of year when family members and friends purchase gifts they hope their loved ones will enjoy. While these presents are thoughtful, some of them might just miss the mark, which causes a need for an exchange.

A study from WalletHub, courtesy of Fortune, found that over 30% of Americans planned to return a holiday gift in 2019. While gift exchanges may be the plan for many, navigating how to return a gift can also cause some stress for the recipient.

Many times, gifts don’t come with any type of receipt, so figuring out if you can even exchange it for another item is a mystery. Each store has a different return and exchange policy, but there are some spots that make the process very easy.

Here are five popular stores around the U.S. that don’t require a receipt or gift receipt in order to exchange an item:

Nordstrom

All returns at this retailer are handled on a "case-by-case basis." Still, the best part about returns at Nordstrom is that receipts aren’t required, there are absolutely no time limits on when you can return or exchange, and no original tags are needed. The only exception for tags is if you’re trying to return a “special occasion” dress or a designer item.

If a return is approved without a receipt, a customer will receive store credit for their item in the amount of its current price.

Kohl’s

If you don’t have a receipt or gift receipt, your item can be searched in the system for purchases and you’ll be good to go. If the store is unable to find the purchase, a non-receipted return may be approved which would result in the customer receiving a Kohl’s Merchandise Credit based on the lowest discounted sale price for the item.

If the return is a premium electronic item, it must be returned within 30 days of purchase. If the electronic was purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25, customers have until Jan. 31 to make a decision.

Costco

With the exception of some items, such as electronics, tires, and batteries, no receipt is necessary when returning items to Costco. While some items need to be returned 90 days after purchase, there’s no time limit on most returns, even during the holiday season.

Walmart

Walmart accepts returns without a receipt as long as you can show a valid photo ID and the return is on an accepted product. Items returned that are worth less than $25 will result in a cash refund while customers returning items over that limit will receive store credit.

TJ Maxx

Customers that make a return without a receipt will only be offered a merchandise credit. Any item that’s worn, used, or in an unsellable condition will not be considered for store credit or an exchange. A valid photo ID is required to be shown on all returns that don’t have a receipt or gift receipt. A signature might also be required.
