A seven-year-old girl died after she was attacked by a pack of stray dogs near her home in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The girl, Devika, was walking toward her home with a bag of food Monday morning when six dogs attacked her. Few children passing the route alerted the victim’s father who rushed the girl to a local hospital in a critical condition. The victim, who had bite marks all over her body, succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

Speaking to the media, senior police officer Ashok Kumar said the animal control was directed to catch all the dogs and “all the villagers have been asked not to leave their children alone” till then.

“This was an isolated incident in the area and we are taking all steps to avoid any such similar incident in the future,” he added.

A resident said following the incident, people were scared to go out of the houses and the children in the area too did not go to schools Tuesday.

The incident comes a few days after a six-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

"Six stray dogs attacked the boy, Sanju Jatav, when he was playing on a ground near his house. His mother, who was nearby, raised an alarm and tried to shoo away the dogs. But the canines attacked her as well," a police officer said, adding that the boy succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

In another incident in Uttar Pradesh, a 12-year-old girl died after she was mauled by a pack of dogs in May 2018. The girl was walking toward the field when she was attacked by seven dogs. The girl died on the spot. Following the death, several villagers blocked roads and demanded action against the ferocious dogs.
