A seven-year-old boy was dangled from a 50-foot-high balcony in order to save a family cat that was trapped. The incident took place in Sichuan Province in south-western China on Sunday.

The unidentified boy’s grandmother decided to dangle him from the fifth floor balcony by a rope to save her pet cat that was trapped on the balcony one level below.

A video of the incident showed the boy putting the cat into a bag as his grandmother held on to the rope amid screams from the onlookers. Another man, identified as the boy’s uncle, then helps in pulling the rope. The boy and the feline were pulled up safely. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media with several people criticizing the grandmother.

Speaking to local media, the grandmother, known by her surname Tang, said though she did not think the act was dangerous when it was committed, she was scared when she saw the video of it later and regretted it.

“It is not that I would rather risk my grandson's life to save my cat. I did it because I was certain of his safety. I know what I did was wrong and will never do that again,” she said.

Meanwhile, Wang Ying, the spokesperson at the local residential committee, confirmed that the boy, a student of first grade, was unhurt and that they had reprimanded the grandmother for her actions. Ying added that the boy lived with his grandparents as his parents were working in another town.
