Apple is widely expected to announce a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, a smaller edition of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, today. According to the rumor mill, Apple will launch the new tablet in two storage sizes, 32GB and 128GB. Also, the starting model is expected to carry a price tag of $599.

The reason why the soon-to-be-announced iPad is being referred to as a smaller version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is that it is rumored to borrow specs and features from its larger sibling. Like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch model is also expected to come in two storage options of 32GB and 128GB, 9 to 5 Mac reported.

The 32GB iPad Pro, expected to be available for $599, will only offer Wi-Fi connectivity. The 128GB model will be more expensive, but it will offer 4G LTE along with Wi-Fi.

The base model of iPad Air 2 from 2014 that offers only Wi-Fi connectivity and features 16GB of storage is priced at $499. and the Wi-Fi-only 64GB iPad Air 2 is priced at $599. Hence, the 32GB 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be costlier than 16GB iPad Air but will offer less storage than the 64GB iPad Air 2 at an identical price tag.

The publication added that the new iPad Pro lineup will coexist with iPad Air 2 line of products. However, since the sales of the original iPad Air from 2013 is dropping, Apple is likely to discontinue it.

Like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, its smaller variant is expected to carry support for Smart Connector and Apple Pencil stylus. Other rumored features of the tablet include Apple A9X chipset, 4GB RAM and a 12-megapixel camera with LED flash.

During the iPad Pro launch event, Apple is also expected to announce a 4-inch iPhone called iPhone SE (Special Edition) whose appearance would be like the iPhone 5S but will come with some specs and features from the iPhone 6s.
