“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” introduced another villain in Season 4, episode 3. Senator Rota Nadeer has become a talking head on news shows for Inhuman debates. The senator, played by Parminder Nagra, is clearly anti-Inhuman and argues that they’re all lethal weapons. However, the episode eventually revealed her very personal connection to the situation.

After S.H.I.E.L.D. director Jeffrey Mace (Jason O’Mara) took the organization public, Nadeer was shown in an apartment watching herself on TV. She insisted that Inhumans will corrupt S.H.I.E.L.D., just like Hydra. She stopped watching her debate to take a call from a Watchdog. She is pleased to hear that 17 Inhumans were killed during the blackouts. She says she is at her brother’s place, and she’ll be in the car in a moment.

Viewers see piles of mail as she walks out, and Nadeer says goodbye to her brother. She asks if she should turn off the TV, but she thinks it’ll keep him company. The camera finally reveals why he isn’t responding: he’s stuck in stone.

It seems like his Inhuman transformation, terrigenesis, was stopped halfway through. Typically, people exposed to terrigen come out of that cocoon pretty quickly if they have DNA that allows him to become Inhuman. Otherwise, normal humans die instantly after being exposed to terrigen.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” executive producer Jed Whedon would only briefly tease why the senator is so prejudiced. “We’ll unpack more of that later, but it’s safe to say that she’s part of the Humans First movement,” Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. “She believes in humanity, and all humanity, and that we should be united, but she believes we should be united against a common enemy, and that enemy is of alien origin and Inhumans. We’ll unpack why she feels that way and what the story is with her brother later, but she does hold that opinion on a deep level.”

Fans will have to keep wondering about the identity of Nadeer’s brother. She clearly doesn’t have any intention of getting him through his transformation, and he’ll likely stay that way for a while.

The Watchdogs, however, are busier than ever. Nadeer’s hateful buddies will continue to try to take out Inhumans next week. They’ll face off with Daisy in episode 4, but, as previously reported, actress Chloe Bennet warned International Business Times that the group is a serious threat.

“They are a dangerous group of people who are prejudiced against people that they don’t understand,” Bennet said. “I think that they are a very relevant representation of a lot of people that we have in our country right now.” Daisy will have to figure out how to outsmart the terrorists without her team for backup.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 4 airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
