American Airlines announced on Tuesday that CEO Doug Parker will retire from the position effective March 31, 2022, though he will continue to serve on the board as chairperson.

Replacing him as CEO is Robert Isom, current president of American Airlines. On the day of the transition, he will also take a spot on the company's board.

Parker has served in leadership positions at various airlines, including Northwest Airlines, America West and U.S. Airways. America West and U.S. Airways merged in 2005. In 2013, U.S. Airways merged with American Airlines.

Before the mergers, Parker became CEO of America West 10 days prior to Sept. 11, 2001. According to American Airlines, Parker is the longest-tenured major airline CEO since deregulation.

“I have worked with Robert for two decades and I am incredibly pleased that he will be the next CEO of American Airlines, which is truly the best job in our industry,” Parker said on the transition. “It has been the privilege of my life to serve for 20 years as an airline CEO.”

Isom started his career at Procter & Gamble before working in the airline industry in key positions at Northwest Airlines and U.S. Airways. At U.S. Airways he was the chief operating officer before joining American Airlines at the same position, as well as executive vice president. Isom was named president of American Airlines in 2016.

Southwest Airlines announced that CEO Gary C. Kelly will be replaced by Bob Jordan in February.
