KEY POINTS

  • Apple's new iPhone SE is a cheap handset at $399
  • The new device features Apple's latest iPhone chip and other upgrades over the original model
  • It does, however, lack a few features that users might want

Apple's new iPhone SE is a powerful budget handset designed to perform well despite having a cheap price tag. The new device, however, doesn't have some of the more familiar features that flagship handset users would want.

These features might not be essential to the iPhone SE experience, but those who have been using them might think that their absence could be a deal-breaker, iPhoneHacks noted. With that said, the new iPhone SE, with its A13 Bionic and improved rear camera, is still a steal for $399.

Here's a quick look at what features 2020 iPhone SE buyers will miss out on if they get the device.

Face ID

First and foremost, the new iPhone SE doesn't have a TrueDepth camera system in front, which means it doesn't have Face ID. Instead, the budget-friendly handset offers Touch ID as a secure authentication method for unlocking the device and making ApplePay transactions.

Those who have been using Apple's recent flagships starting with the iPhone X will be used to unlocking their handsets with a simple look on the selfie camera. The 2020 iPhone SE can't be unlocked that way.

Ultra-Wide Angle Camera

Second, the new iPhone SE only has one camera at the back: a 12MP wide angle sensor. It doesn't have an ultra-wide camera that works to capture wide shots, which is perfect for when taking photos of a large group of people or when taking pictures of nature. It doesn't even have a telephoto lens.

Night Mode

Third, Apple might've equipped the new iPhone SE with an A13 Bionic chip that can enhance the single rear camera's performance, but it didn't equip the new handset with Night Mode. This means the new device won't be able to take great shots in the dark – not like the Pixel 3a, which is but a budget handset that's good for taking night shots.

U1 Chip

Fourth, the 2020 doesn't have the U1 Ultra-Wideband chip inside the iPhone 11 series. This might not seem important to some, but it actually is – the component allows users to locate missing iPhones even from far away. It might even help users locate other missing items.

Headphone Jack

Lastly, the 2020 iPhone SE doesn't have the 3.5mm headphone jack that midrange budget handsets should have. Those who were expecting to see the beloved port on the device (since the original had one) will be disappointed to know that it doesn't have it.
