  • The 21-year-old is eager to contribute more to England and Arsenal in the future

Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah is enthusiastic about further improving his game after he recently broke the scoring record for England’s Under-21 club.

The 21-year-old made history Tuesday as he scored his 14th goal in just 12 Under-21 games in England’s 2-1 victory against Turkey, The Guardian reported. This accomplishment puts him ahead of football legend Alan Shearer, who scored 260 Premier League goals before retiring in 2006.

This is a big milestone for Nketiah as he’s endured setbacks throughout his young career such as being released by Chelsea when he was 16. With everything that he’s been through, he shared that he wants more for his career's future.

"A lot of the boys might have thought the chance had gone when I missed the pen but I just stayed calm and I knew another chance would come if I kept working and kept my head up," Nketiah said, Goal reported.

"I am mentally tough; I have faced a lot of adversity in my life and overcome it. Football is like that as a game, it isn't always going to go your way and I have learned how to deal with that. I take pride in the chances falling to me and having the job of converting," the forward added.

Now, as a member of Arsenal, he’s looking forward to making a name for himself and continuously develop his game.

"It is a double-edged sword when it doesn't come off; you have to be able to take it and get up and go again. That's what I always do, whether I score or miss, I will always put myself in the position for the chance and I want to have the opportunity to get that chance again," the 2021 English Super Cup winner shared.

Nketiah also said that being mentioned alongside Shearer is a big moment for him. The English FA Cup winner emphasized that there are a lot more ways for him to progress as a football player.

"I would love to get to where Shearer was. He is a great player and it is an honor to break his record," Nketiah said.

As a member of the Gunners, he’s appeared in 43 games and has netted nine goals. Nketiah said that he’s ready for more success in the future as long he continuously works on improving as a player.

"I am grateful with the opportunities that Mikel [Arteta] has given me so far and I am hungry for more," Nketiah concluded. "I am eager to kick on and keep contributing to both teams to play as many games as possible."
