  • Gunners boss Mikel Arteta confirms Thomas Partey will miss the next few matches

Arsenal appears to have missed out on signing major target Dominik Szoboszlai as he nears a switch to RB Leipzig, a report says.

The Gunners have not been in their best form this season in the English Premier League. Mikel Arteta’s side is coming off a 4-2 win against Dundalk Thursday but is still one of the bottom teams in the standings.

With star midfielder Thomas Partey out of the picture once again due to injury, Arsenal has set its sights on Salzburg midfield sensation Szoboszlai. However, the English club is very likely to miss out on signing him in the next transfer window as the Hungarian is now expected to join Salzburg’s sister club Leipzig, Sky Sport Germany reported. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Szoboszlai had emerged as a notable prospect for Arsenal in the January window after an impressive run with the German side this season. The 20-year-old was previously available for €25 million ($30 million), but Salzburg's sports director Christoph Freund was reportedly in Leipzig to negotiate a deal for the midfielder.

Both clubs are aiming to “officially announce the transfer before Christmas day,” the report added.

Other big-name clubs who reportedly hoped to strike a deal for Szoboszlai were AC Milan, La Liga champ Real Madrid and Bundesliga champ Bayern Munich.

Szoboszlai’s arrival at Emirates Stadium could’ve possibly helped Arsenal this season as Arteta had just confirmed that Partey will “miss the next few matches.” Though the Spaniard manager is optimistic about Partey’s situation, there is still no concrete timeframe as to when the midfield star will return.

"[Partey] got injured in the same area, but not in exactly the same spot as before," Arteta told reporters in a press conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League group match against Dundalk. "He had an MRI yesterday, there is an injury there, he will miss the next few matches."

“He did incredibly well, he was confident,” he added. “We tested him three times and he had no symptoms. But in football you have a lot of unpredictable actions.”

Arsenal managed to score four times against Dundalk courtesy of Eddie Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny, Joe Willock and Folarin Balogun. Arteta is pleased with the team’s performance but admitted that Arsenal will aim to bounce back from the devastating derby loss to Tottenham last weekend by beating Burnley on Sunday.

“We just need the result,” the Gunners coach emphasized. “I have zero doubts about how the boys are going to respond. How we are going to try. How involved everybody’s going to be to support the team and after we have to put it and get the three points in our locker.”
